Explore the Lake District
22 April 2024

As May rolls around, the Lake District comes alive. The stunning landscapes are transformed as beautiful colours take centre stage alongside newborn lambs frolicking in the spring sunshine.

This vibrant month also plays host to two renowned running events: the Brathay Windermere Marathon and the Windermere Lap Races.

Don't worry, we're not suggesting you take part - even seasoned runners find these events challenging. But why not take inspiration from the runners and explore the Lake District at your own pace? Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a weekend walker, there are countless ways to experience the same stunning scenery without the need to smash personal records. Our cosy, comfortable cottages provide the perfect base for exploring the myriad of trails and paths that crisscross this enchanting landscape, and one such trail that beckons to be discovered is the Dales Way, conveniently located right on the doorstep of our Windermere Holiday Cottages.

The Dales Way

The Dales Way runs for 80 miles from Ilkley in West Yorkshire to Bowness-on-Windermere, following mostly riverside paths and passing through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the gentle foothills of southern Lakeland to the shore of England's largest lake.

Embark on a leisurely stroll along the Dales Way and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds that define this captivating corner of the country: take in the panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the fells beyond and breathe in crisp mountain air. What better way to unwind and recharge your batteries than by meandering through the serene landscapes of the Lake District?

But don't take our word for it. Studies have shown that whether you're a seasoned marathon runner or a casual walker, getting out and about in the Lake District offers a wealth of benefits:

  • Improved physical and mental health: Exercise releases endorphins, boosts your mood, and keeps your body strong.
  • Stunning scenery: The Lake District is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason. Breathe in the fresh air and soak up the beauty of mountains, lakes, and rolling hills.
  • Reconnect with nature: Escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with the peace and quiet of the natural world.
  • Discover hidden gems: The Lake District is packed with charming villages, historical sites, and local pubs all just waiting to be explored.

The Lake District offers something for everyone. While the marathon runners and ultra-runners push their limits, you can create your own unforgettable adventure, tailored to your fitness level and interests.

So lace up your walking boots and get ready to explore the magic of the Lakes at your own pace.
