I'm sure we all agree that the Lake District is a beautiful spot all year round, but it becomes even more magical as the festive season approaches. With its twinkling lights, festive cheer, and stunning scenery, it's the perfect place to get into the Christmas spirit.
And what better way to do that than by visiting one of the many Winter markets in the area? There are a variety of markets to choose from, each with its own unique charm.
Below are just a few of our favourites, all within easy reach of either our Windermere Cottages or our Ullswater Cottages (apart from the Taste Cumbria Christmas Market in Cockermouth).
Ambleside Christmas Light Switch on: 16 November
This event is one of the highlights of the Lake District's winter calendar. The market, held in conjunction with the town's Christmas lights switch-on, transforms Ambleside into a winter wonderland with local vendors offering everything from handcrafted gifts to festive treats.
Ulverston Dickensian Festival: Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November
This is a winter market with a nostalgic twist. Horse-drawn carriages, street food vendors, Dickensian costumes. There's a wide range of stalls offering crafts, gifts, and delicious treats, as well as street performers and traditional music to complete the festive experience.
Keswick Victorian Fayre: Sunday 1 December
Another event with a nostalgic twist is Keswick's annual Victorian Fayre. Step back in time with traditional Victorian stalls, vendors dressed in period costume, and a delightful mix of live entertainment including brass bands and carol singers. Visit the Christmas themed market where you can enjoy browsing an array of local crafts, artisanal foods and unique gifts.
Christmas at Levens Hall: Saturdays and Sundays in December from 11am to 4pm
Levens Hall will be opening the house and the topiary garden in the run up to Christmas. On 7th and 8th, 14th and 15th, and 21st and 22nd December, the house will be beautifully decorated for Christmas, with fires lit and choirs and musicians from the local area performing carols in the Great Hall. You will also be able to visit the Levens Kitchen where there will be a delicious festive menu on offer.
Taste Cumbria Christmas Market in Cockermouth: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December
Get into the festive spirit with Taste Cumbria Christmas in Cockermouth on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December 2024.
You be treated to more than just food and drink at this Christmas event. There will be gifts and homewares, seasonal specials and all the sweet and savoury treats you'd expect from the county's favourite food festival.
Hawkshead Christmas Fair: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December
For more festive fun and Christmas cheer why not visit the picturesque village of Hawkshead? With lots of indoor and oudoor stalls, local crafts, delicious food and live music, this is a great day out for the whole family. Be sure to take part in the carol singing and keep an eye out for Father Christmas.
Kirkby Lonsdale Christmas Fair: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December
Our final stop is Kirkby Lonsdale. As usual, the Market Square will be packed with great food, drink and gift stalls, and there's also the indoor market in Lunesdale Hall.
Whether you're looking for festive cheer, delicious local food or simply a taste of local tradition, these Lake District winter markets offer something for everyone. They're the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit.
