Things to Do on a Rainy Day in the Lake District
22 July 2024

We all know that the Lake District gets its fair share of rain, but don't let that dampen your spirits. There are plenty of indoor activities and attractions that can make a rainy day just as enjoyable. Here's a guide to some fantastic rainy-day activities - and we've made sure there's something for everyone.

The World of Beatrix Potter

Step into the enchanting world of Beatrix Potter's best-loved characters. This interactive museum in Bowness-on-Windermere is perfect for children and adults who grew up reading tales of Peter Rabbit and friends. The attraction includes beautiful displays, a delightful café, and a gift shop filled with charming souvenirs.

The Lakes Aquarium

The Lakes Aquarium is home to hundreds of amazing creatures, showcasing local wildlife from around the Lake District, as well as more exotic species from around the world.

Get up close to the playful otters in their specially designed woodland home; see Lakeland's menacing pike; and take a walk through the amazing underwater tunnel where native British fish are waiting to be discovered - make sure you don't miss feeding time where you'll see the surface dwelling ducks dive down into the waters in search of food.

Museums

One obvious rainy day native is to visit one of our many Lake District museums, a chance to step back in time and delve into the Lake District's rich history.

Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow is home to over 30,000 exhibits including classic cars, motorcyles and automobilia. While the kids marvel at the vintage vehicles, the adults can take a trip down memory lane as you wander through over 100 years of automotive history, as well as some local history, authentic recreations and period shopping displays. You will also get to see the exhibition dedicated to the work of Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald, who between them set twenty-one land a water speed records.

Located on the shores of Lake Windermere, Windermere Jetty Museum boasts a stunning collection of around forty boats and sailing vessels, including steam launches, record-breaking speed boats and motorboats. These boats cover the history of sailing on Windermere from as far back as the late eighteenth century. You will also have an opportunity to see ongoing restoration projects and to chat with the teams behind them.

Or for something a little different, and perfect if you're staying in one of our Ullswater Cottages, the Derwent Pencil Museum is a great day out for the whole family.

Indoor Climbing

If your family is up for an adventure, try indoor climbing at one of the indoor climbing walls in Ambleside, Kendal or Keswick. These climbing centres offer facilities for all ages and skill levels, with trained staff to ensure safety and fun for everyone - a great option for a wet day.

Blackwell, The Arts and Crafts House

Built at the turn of the twentieth century, Blackwell is a stunning grade one listed property and one of the UK's finest examples of Arts and Crafts architecture.

The house, which overlooks Lake Windermere and the Lake District Fells, has retained almost all of its original Arts and Crafts features. It's also home to a wonderful collection of furniture and objects from some of the Arts and Crafts period's leading designers and studios.

A rainy day in the Lake District doesn't mean you have to stay cooped up in your cottage. Whether you're travelling with family or looking for adult-oriented activities, the Lake District offers plenty of options to keep everyone entertained, come rain or shine. So grab your raincoat, embrace the weather, and make the most of your stay.
