Are you ready to experience the world of falconry?
We've teamed up with Lake District Falconry to offer an unforgettable falconry experience.
This is a stroll on the Matson Ground Estate like no other, where you'll be accompanied by a bird of prey flying freely as you walk, swooping down to land on your gloved fist when called.
All sessions begin with an introduction to the bird and how to handle it. As well some background into what's often referred to as the 'Sport of Kings', our experienced falconer will also give you tips on carrying the hawk on the glove.
Experience the thrill of the bird flying from a nearby tree or wall straight to your gloved hand. Learn all about the birds, their behavioural habits and the history of falconry. The walk lasts approximately one hour and is no further than a couple of miles. Taking place on the Matson Ground Estate, you will also be treated to stunning views of Lake Windermere and the Lake District fells beyond, so make sure you bring a camera.
The Sport of Kings
During the course of your hawk walk, you will gain all sorts of knowledge about the birds and the history of the sport. Here are a few little nuggets so you can impress your fellow falconers on the day.
It is believed that falconry was well established in the Middle and Far East by 2000BC, although the earliest evidence of its practice was not until around 722BC during the reign of Sargon II
Falconry was probably introduced to Europe in about 400 AD when the Huns and Alans invaded from the East
It was reputedly the favourite sport of every King of England from Alfred the Great to George III, hence the Sport of Kings
Did you know that there are also a number of expressions in use today which are derived from falconry? Fed-up for instance. We use it when we feel low and don't feel like doing anything. It stems from a hawk having eaten its fill and no longer wanting to hunt.
Others include "under the thumb", "at the end of my tether" and "haggard". But we don't want to give everything away. You'll learn about the history, the expressions and so much more on the day. This really is an unforgettable experience.
Important Information
The whole experience last up to 1 hour, during which the falconer will explain all you need to know and answer any questions you may have.
This is a year-round activity so please dress appropriately for the season. And please remember that this is a countryside walk so sturdy footwear is a must.
No previous experience with birds of prey is necessary as you'll be given full instructions.
